"Oh come on! It will be fun!"

Today was good.
Today was fun.
Tomorrow is another one.
~ Dr. Suess

We were sitting around the dining room table the other day and my friends agreed that I could get them to do anything with me. I just assume people want to do the same things:
  • Why wouldn't you want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane in Moab, Utah?
  • Why wouldn't you want to bungee jump high over Squaw Valley?
  • Why wouldn't you want to zipline (in Mexico OR in Santa Margarita, CA)?
  • Why wouldn’t you want to go to Europe next week (because the airfare is a screaming deal!)
  • Why wouldn’t you want to go to Knott’s Scary Farm during October?
  • Why wouldn’t you want to go on a vampire tour in New Orleans?
  • Why wouldn’t you want to race across Post Street in SF (and almost get killed) in time to see a matinee of The Graduate?
It's the little things too, because those can be just as much (or more) fun:
  • Why wouldn't you want to go to lunch and have a pedicure instead of having our scheduled business meeting?
  • Why wouldn’t you want to ride the glass elevator in the St. Francis Hotel in SF, simply to see the view from the 32nd floor?
  • Why wouldn’t you want to run back and forth across a swinging bridge?
  • Why wouldn’t you want to stop the ice cream truck and buy a drumstick?
  • Why wouldn't you want to write a song while on a roadtrip?
  • Why wouldn't you want to take the curviest road to the destination, instead of the fastest one?
Mike said that he always knows when his wife could get into trouble when I say, “Oh come on! It will be fun!”

The bottom line is that I’m spontaneous. I was before cancer, and I am even more so after cancer! I always want to have fun, no matter what we are doing. And I prefer doing it with friends.

If I say to you, “Oh come on! It will be fun!” Put a smile on your face. Keep your arms inside the ride until it comes to a complete stop. Afterwards, you can tell all your friends, “You won’t believe what Hayley made me do...It WAS fun.”

I think that shall be my epitaph when the time comes.

Live your life on your own terms.

Happy Cancerversary To Me

10 years ago today -10/8/2002, I woke up, fuzzy, in a bright room, with stark white walls. The first thing I did was place my right hand over my left breast to see if it was still there. Then I saw my husband, with tears in his eyes, and he said, “It was bad. The cancer is in your lymph nodes. You are going to have to have chemo.”

Then I remember thinking that I should probably call my hairdresser to get my haircut short, and damnit, I didn’t want to be bald.

And then I thought, “F*%# cancer. This is not how my story ends.”

Olympic Torch - Very Special Escorts

The Winter Olympics are almost upon us and the eyes of the world are on Vancouver, Canada .

ABREAST IN A BOAT, the very first breast cancer survivor dragon boat team in the world will be participating in escorting THE OLYMPIC TORCH to its final destination before the 2010 Games begin.

On February 12, 2010, after crossing Canada for 106 days, the last two torch relays will be completed by dragon boats.  At approximately 1:00 pm (Pacific Time) 20 members of Abreast In A Boat, a steer and a drummer will have the honour of being a part of the six boat flotilla that will shadow the two torch relay boats escorting the Olympic Torch to Yale Town .

Dr Don McKenzie, founder of Abreast In A Boat, will have a seat in one of the two relay boats carrying the torch.  What an incredible opportunity for everyone involved, and in particular, for breast cancer survivors around the world.

The International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission is delighted to share this news. It is very fitting that our ‘Dr Don’ – an amazingly generous and humble man – who has given us the gift of the dragon boat, coupled with the brave originals from Abreast In A Boat, should be so honoured. This is such an affirmation of Dr Don McKenzie’s work re -exercise and chronic disease.

Without the work of Dr Don McKenzie and those brave originals in Vancouver – none of us would be enjoying the fitness, fun and camaraderie that comes post diagnosis of this insidious disease.
